State Sen. Bob Duff is calling for "immediate action," saying an elevator outage at a Norwalk apartment complex is leaving seniors and people with disabilities trapped in their apartments - and not for the first time.

Darlene Rauda says she has had it with the monthlong elevator outage at 93 Richards Ave. in Norwalk, a four-story complex home to many seniors and people with disabilities.

Rauda says she lives on the first floor but is worried about the people who live above her.

"If they live on the upper floors, how are they getting downstairs? It's impossible. It's ridiculous," she said.

One senior, who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution, had to cancel her doctor appointment last week because she could not get down the stairs without the aid of the elevator.

That resident's aide also asked to remain anonymous and said it is hard enough for her to take the stairs - and that it is impossible for her 90-year-old client, who she says would have no way of getting out of her apartment should there ever be a fire.

Duff says he has tried to get the problem fixed in the past.

"Here we are again. I will once again direct my staff to do everything possible to get the elevator working. This is not a luxury but a necessity. Seniors and those with mobility issues are essentially trapped in their homes," said Duff.

Rauda says she can advocate for herself, but many of the seniors here cannot.

"Nobody seems to care, and I feel bad because they're elderly people and they need help," said Rauda.

The complex has not responded to News 12's request for comment.
